Keeping your website safe

Keeping your website safe can be a challenge, there are all kinds of threats out there that want to damage your site for a variety of different reasons. You don't have to be paranoid about your site but you do have to make sure that your site security is adequate. With a few basic steps this should not be a problem.

The most important thing when it comes to keeping your website safe is to make sure that you are using a good web host. A lot of people when they are building a website will look for the cheapest hosting that they can find. The problem is that the way that they keep the cost down is by offering a lower level of service than you could get from a better quality host. Often they try to save money by cutting down on the security department. A good web host should have a security department that can help to protect your site. They should also offer good technical support so that if your site does become compromised you can get the problem fixed quickly.

The other key to making sure that your website is safe is to ensure that you have a really good virus protection software. There are a lot of viruses on the web and they are the most likely way that your site can be compromised. Make sure that you do some research and find the best option that is available in this regard. Again this is another area where you really don't want to look for the cheapest option, you need the one that offers the best protection. Also make sure that you keep the software up to date. There are new viruses coming along all the time and your software needs to be constantly updated to address this. Never delay accepting an update from your virus protection software.

Your password is the way that you access the control panel for your website which means that if anybody finds out what it is they will have complete access to your site. That means that you have to make sure that you have strong passwords and that they are well protected. A password should use both numbers and letters and should not be something that somebody could guess. Ideally it should be completely random even if this makes it harder for you to memorize. Also don't use the same password for all of your online accounts, if you do somebody who gets access to one of your accounts will have access to all of them including your website control panel. It is also strongly recommended that you change your password on a regular basis, at least every three months. This is something that you should do with all of your passwords but is especially important with the ones for your website.
